The evolving European trade environment

Pétur G. Thorsteinsson

The European trade environment is being influenced today by two major trends, those of integration and of outreach. European integration is marked by the expansion of the EU and the web of preferential trade agreements being developed among the twenty or so non-EU European countries. European outreach refers to the challenges posed by globalization and the need to connect European economies with those of the rapidly expanding economies in other parts of the world, especially in Asia. This outreach is marked by the negotiations in the WTO, as well as expanding networks of free trade agreements. This article describes how EFTA has tried to meet these two major challenges and what lessons may be drawn from its experience.
